First written records of our city date back to the 10th century. Being already at that time a notable commercial centre around the Wawel Hill, Krakow evolved to gain city rights in 1257 and has then been the capital of Poland for six centuries in total.
Krakow is full of legends (ever heard of the Wawel dragon?) and impressive historical monuments. Unlike many other cities it survived wars without harm to precious architectonic treasures. It’s considered to be the cultural capital of Poland and was named the European Capital of Culture in 2000 by the EU. Krakow is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
It’s a young and lively city full of students. There are more than 10 universities in Krakow, with the Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364 as one of the most important representatives.
